Information for Authors

GUIDELINES

We encourage you to submit any manuscripts that fit The Harvard Brain's mission to examine human behavior and mental life from a wide range of perspectives, including (but not limited to): Computer Science, History and Science, Human Evolutionary Biology, Linguistics, Neuroscience, Philosophy, and Psychology. 

Prior to submitting your work, please carefully review the following guidelines regarding publication in The Harvard Brain. 
  1. Your submission is eligible if it has not been published anywhere else (including print or online). 
  2. All submissions should remain accessible to a general audience. 
  3. All submissions must be formatted in APA. 
  4. Please submit your piece as a Microsoft Word file. 
  5. ​We are very flexible in terms of what you write about as long as it is related to the study of mind, brain and behavior (MBB). ​​
ARTICLE TYPES

We accept several types of articles, including but not limited to original research manuscripts. 
  • Original undergraduate research related to the study of mind, brain, and behavior (MBB)
  • General article
  • News report
  • Commentary
  • Book review
  • Interview with a professor
  • Note: We are open to other types of submissions too! If you would like to submit a piece of your writing that does not fall under one of these above categories, please email [email protected] for approval. 

The table below provides guidelines and more information about each submission type. ​
Article Type
Guidelines
Original undergraduate research
  • Be sure to receive approval from your principal investigator and any other research advisors before submitting your work to us. When you email us your submission, please explicitly write that you have received approval to publish in our journal. 
  • You do not need a completed research study to write about your research work for The Harvard Brain.​
  • Include background information, research question, significance of the research, methods, necessary figures, any preliminary results and analyses, and what's next in your research work. 
  • Be sure to list your principal investigator and any other research advisers. ​​
  • Submission length recommendation: 2 pages single spaced maximum.
  • APA format (in-text citations and references).
General article
  • Write about a groundbreaking finding or general research topic  that is of interest to you!​
  • Submission length recommendation: approximately 1 page single spaced; must not be longer than 2 pages single spaced.
  • APA format (in-text citations and references). 
​News Report
  • Write about a recent significant finding related to the study of mind, brain, and behavior! 
  • Please include necessary background information, what the finding is and its significance, societal impact/implications and/or possible controversy.
  • Submission length: 1 page single-spaced maximum
  • APA format (in-text citations and references). 
​Commentary
  • ​Write about your thoughts and take a stance on a current issue in the field of mind, brain, and behavior.
  • Submission length recommendation: approximately 1 page single spaced; must not be longer than 2 pages single spaced.
  • APA format  (in-text citations and references).
​Book Review
  • Review a book related to the study of mind, brain, and behavior.
  • Provide a concise summary, critically access the book, and give your recommendation​.
  • Submission length recommendation: approximately 1 page single spaced; must not be longer than 2 pages single spaced.​
​Interview with a professor
  • Interview a professor whose research interests you!
  • Recommendation: Ask them ~5-10 questions (or however many you see fit)
  • For your submission: write a quick introduction about who the professor is and their work. The interview can then be presented in a straightforward Question and Answer format.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

​To submit your manuscript, email your article in the form of a Word Document to [email protected] with the following information included:
  • Your name
  • Graduation year 
  • If you do not attend Harvard College, please specify which college you attend.
  • Your major or prospective major
  • Type of Submission
  • Please acknowledge in your email that you have reviewed the "Information for Authors" page.

Our editorial team will carefully review your manuscript. If wedecide to consider your manuscript for publication, we will follow up with requests for revisions.
